Topic: Insider Tips for Securing a Speaking Slot at SecTor & Black Hat
Speaker: Eldon Sprickerhoff

Ever wondered how to improve your likelihood of getting a talk accepted at SecTor / Black Hat? This session will guide you through the process, from crafting a compelling proposal to understanding what the review board looks for. Eldon will share insights from myriad submissions he has evaluated over the years as a review board member for SecTor. Learn the key elements that make a submission stand out and avoid common pitfalls that can derail your talk's chances for being approved. Whether you're a seasoned presenter or a first-timer, find out what gets a proposal noticed and potentially even accepted. Further you'll learn about:

  • Essential components of a compelling proposal, including how to clearly define the problem / solution and actions your audience should consider

  • Criteria that may be considered for varying tracks (e.g., technical, tools, management, security fundamentals)

  • Practical advice on how to prepare and deliver a talk that resonates with different security audiences

Eldon Sprickerhoff is an active entrepreneur, author, subject matter expert and company builder in information security. He co-founded eSentire (a leading global cybersecurity Managed Detection and Response company). He is an Entrepreneur in Residence helping guide startups at the Cybersecure Catalyst,  a Strategic Advisor at Caledon Ventures, member of the Board of Directors at Cavelo, and advisory board member at HFT Connect and SecTor, Canada’s premier security conference. He is writing a book of advice and survival tactics for first-time technical founders as they make their way through their startup-to-scaleup journey.

In 2019 Eldon was awarded the J.W. Graham Medal in Computing and Innovation for his innovative and entrepreneurial achievements in the field of cybersecurity. He has a Bachelor of Mathematics (Major: Computer Science, Minor: Economics) from the University of Waterloo.

Topic: Rethinking SIEM: Modernizing Effective Logging for Security Analytics
Speakers: Anuk Bhandal and Noman Hashmi

Today’s enterprises face sprawling tools, ballooning asset inventories, and increasingly complex architectural footprints. The traditional method of sending all your security data to the SIEM as one platform for ingestion and analytics is no longer a viable solution. This session will explore the paradigm shift in data collection and security analysis from people, process, and technology perspective for this central aspect of security operations.

Anuk Bhandal has held both practical and leadership roles in the threat detection and GRC domains of cybersecurity within the financial services sector. His experiences span across building logging and monitoring SIEM/SOAR/UEBA program solutions, to providing information security risk and governance leadership to large enterprises. His current role specializes in developing security operations and cyber risk mitigation programs at KPMG Canada as a part of the Cyber Security Advisory services group. As an avid self-learner and proponent of uplifting others, Anuk is always seeking to understand the rapid shifts in the cyber security landscape and volunteers his time to help mentor others in the field.

Anuk holds a CISSP certification as well as educational credentials in an Bachelors of Science (Honors) from the University of Toronto, and Computer Security & Digital Forensics certifications from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson).

Noman Hashmi is an avid cybersecurity professional with over a decade of experience in the field. He has held progressive roles in network operations, application development, and security operations. In his current role, Noman combines technical expertise with business acumen to lead the Threat Detection & Response strategy for a large financial enterprise.

Driven by curiosity, he enjoys being a jack of all trades in security, and advocates for technology and automation that benefit security. He holds several industry certifications (i.e., GSEC, GCIH, GCIA, GREM, GMON) and is committed to continuous learning to stay abreast of the latest trends in the cybersecurity landscape.

Outside of professional endeavors, Noman is passionate about working on his home security & automation projects.

We look forward to see you all there!
